Whitby Music Centre

Pop Choir

Our pop choir rehearses on Monday evenings under the expert baton of Helena Swain.  The choir launched in November and will make its debut performances during our Christmas concert season.
The musical, personal and social benefits of singing in a choir are well-known and currently being enjoyed by almost 3 million people in the UK.  We are proud to bring all this to the doorstep of people in and around Whitby with our exciting new pop choir open to local children, young people and adults.  Helena looks forward to welcoming you to rehearsals as we develop the current choir into two or more different choirs based on different ages or skills.
If you’re still wondering if singing in a choir is for you, we have shared this research, recently published on Oxford University’s website by Jacques Launay, one of their PhD psychologists.
Jacques summarises these benefits of choral singing:

Social
Supports the building of effective social networks – much better than relying on social media for your interaction with others!  Choirs are a superb way of combatting loneliness as members engage in meaningful and enjoyable activity together with performances and festivals providing the boost of working towards a common goal.
Physical
Improves breathing, posture and muscle tension.  Listening to music and participating in music releases neurochemicals that relieve pain and support the immune system.

Regular membership of a choir has been shown to stimulate the memory and we’re sure you’ve seen how singing helps those with dementia connect with others.

Psychological
Singing in a choir improves our feelings of happiness and wellness, Dr Launay refers to research that shows the benefits are greater than from listening to music or talking about happy memories.
Added to all this is the enjoyment of performance, developing new skills and working with other musicians.  So, what are you waiting for?  Get in touch with us through the website or our Facebook page or simply pop along (no pun intended!) to Whitby School on most term-time Monday evenings – please check the website for dates.  All ages, experience and abilities are welcome and as the choir grows and develops, we look forward to launching a second group.

We rehearse at Whitby Lower School site, Airy Hill on term time Monday evenings from 6.30pm-7.45pm – a full list of dates can be viewed below:
